Het dankt zijn vorm en kleur aan de joden en moslims die in 1492 omwille van hun geloof in Spanje met de dood werden bedreigd. Chefchaouen werd hun veilige haven die tot 1920 voor christenen verboden was. Joden vertrokken in 1956.
