De zandvlaktes achter de golf course en het strand van Mulranny bieden uitzicht op de voorste eilanden van de baai. Via een hoger gelegen, eeuwenoud pad, de Achill Spur, doorkruisen we veengebied met resten van prehistorische bossen, terwijl beneden ons steeds meer eilanden zichtbaar worden in de baai. Dit verdronken \u2018drumlin\u2019 landschap van Clew Bay heeft zich in de IJstijd gevormd. Een afdaling naar het water bij Tiernaur heeft weer heel andere verrassingen in petto.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_btn3-container vc_btn3-inline vc_do_btn\" ><button class=\"vc_general vc_btn3 vc_btn3-size-xs vc_btn3-shape-round vc_btn3-style-flat vc_btn3-color-pink\">4<\/button><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element vc_custom_1536831258853\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><strong>Kloosters en woontorens aan de baai<\/strong><br \/>\nHet klooster van Burrishoole dat in 1470 door Domicaner monniken werd gesticht, ligt verscholen aan een inham van Clew Bay. Even verderop ligt een woontoren uit ca. 1550 van Grace O\u2019Malley. Woontorens kennen, evenals kloosters, een lange geschiedenis in Ierland. Mayo bezit meerdere woontorens, waaronder \u00e9\u00e9n van de oudsten, uit ca. 1429, die lokaal bekend staat onder de naam Grace O\u2019 Malley\u2019s Castle. De directe omgeving van de toren werd in 2013 nog aan een archeologisch onderzoek onderworpen. Deze woontoren ligt niet ver van open Oceaan. Nergens in Ierland liggen er zoveel verschillende op een kluitje! In het schier ontembare landschap van de Ierse westkust ligt een historische tuin die door twee Nederlanders sedert 1997 opnieuw tot bloei is gebracht. Voorbij deze gecultiveerde oase, ontvouwt zich de ruige kustlijn van de Atlantische oceaan die ons voert naar de historisch beladen plekken van Achill Island, met een turbulente geschiedenis, zoals The Deserted Village, The Mission met Saint Thomas Church en The Valley House.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_btn3-container vc_btn3-inline vc_do_btn\" ><button class=\"vc_general vc_btn3 vc_btn3-size-xs vc_btn3-shape-round vc_btn3-style-flat vc_btn3-color-pink\">6<\/button><\/div>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element vc_custom_1537971245821\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><strong>Westport en Clew Bay<\/strong><br \/>\nWestport is een 18e eeuws stadje. Het ligt onder de rook van de heilige berg van de patroonheilige van Ierland, Saint Patrick, en aan Clew Bay. Hier bezoeken we een Victoriaans landgoed met tuin.
